The Inanimate Tragedy

While clearing space on my hard drive, I ran across a few short films I made back in 2000 when I ws a starry-eyed undergraduate. This is a dramatization of Edward Gorey's tale "The Inanimate Tragedy" and one of my favorites. With help from the miracle of You Tube (where I've recently been posting our biology videos) I thought that Halloween would be a good time to share this.

DVD: Supersize Me

Last weekend when it snowed at the end of April and it was too cold to walk the dog, we rented movies and stayed inside. The best movie we rented by far, was Supersize Me.

I read Fast Food Nation a couple of years ago and enjoyed it tremendously. This movie was very much in the same vein. There's an extra interview on the DVD with the author, Eric Schlosser.

We bought the DVD today for the office because we're thinking about doing some sort of unit on food. I've been collecting sources for the past three years of so, and we've got a lot of material (enough for a course) to work with. Might be a little summer project...

I think we've all seen Bonanza

We watched the Director's cut of Donnie Darko last night at Cinema Voshell. It's one of my favorite movies, and I was really looking forward to seeing the new version, which never made it to the big screen here. It was good, but I think overall, I prefer the theatrical release. I know that "Never Tear us Apart" was the original choice for the opening music, and that is totally my favorite INXS song, but I don't think I can live without "The Killing Moon."

Some of the scenes that were included were really good, but overall — and especially the end — it really lacked the emotional punch of the original. Besides, half of the fun of that movie was doing the work, going to the websites, listening to your friends' crackpot theories to find out what the hell happened.

Also notable, was that every time Frank the bunny came on screen or talked, Turkey growled. That dog hates giant, evil bunnies.
